The process will include the organization’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats, in what is commonly called a “SWOT” analysis. Looking at external factors (community needs or the economic outlook, for example) as well as internal capacity is important.

META’s Capacity development process includes many different levels, but three of the most important are: individual, organizational, and societal (often referred to as the enabling environment). A successful approach to developing capacity is likely to involve all three of these important levels. Capacity building enables organizations and their leaders to develop competencies and skills that can make them more effective and sustainable, thus increasing the potential for charitable nonprofits to enrich lives and solve society’s most intractable problems.
