CULTURAL COMPETENCY TRAINING FOCUSED ON MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES AND VETERANS

4. Fee/Cost: FREE (continental breakfast and lunch will be provided both days)

5. Recommended Attendees: Personnel that will be involved with delivering ACT, crisis personnel, any staff serving individuals with Serious Emotional Disturbances/Severe Mental Illnesses or Co-Occurring Substance use and Mental Health Disorders, and staff working with Veterans such as Mental Health Counselors, Substance Abuse Counselors, Patient Navigators/Case Managers, Nurses (LVNs, RNs), Peer Support staff, etc.

6. Scholarships: If your agency is currently a META client, you will receive a $150.00 scholarship per person attending the two-day training.

Trainer Information

Matthew Belver

Sergeant First Class (SFC) Matthew Belver is a distinguished graduate of Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in Sociology and Biology. Beginning his career as an officer in the United States Navy, he served as a P-3 Orion Combat Aircrew Mission Commander and later as the Operations and Weapons Officer for Commander, Task Force 67 in Naples, Italy. Transitioning to civilian law enforcement, he joined the San Antonio Police Department before returning to military service with the Texas Army National Guard as a criminal investigator and Infantry instructor. In 2016, SFC Belver redefined his focus by reclassifying into the Army’s Psychological Operations program. He currently holds the position of Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) of Detachment 1730 within the 344th Tactical Psychological Operations Company (Airborne) in Austin, TX.

Throughout his military journey, SFC Belver has seen extensive deployments to various regions including Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, Central America, and Southeast Asia. He has furthered his education with master’s degrees in criminal justice and public policy from Arizona State University and in education from Liberty University. In 2022, he graduated with High Honors from the Department of Defense’s Foreign Language Center in Monterey, California. He currently resides in San Antonio, TX with his wife, Arlette, who owns and operates four Aqua-Tots Swim School franchises in the city.

Aaron Diaz

Aaron V. Diaz, based in Corpus Christi, Texas, is a seasoned professional with a master’s degree in social work from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. Aaron’s journey in social work is deeply rooted in his service as an SGT E5 Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam Era, where he specialized as a Drug Abuse Counselor. During his pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Aaron concurrently served as a Drug Abuse Counselor, laying the foundation for his expertise in addiction treatment. His career progressed as he assumed roles such as Chemical Dependency Counselor and Clinic Director at a Methadone Treatment Outpatient Clinic. Additionally, he served as the Director of the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program for the Local Mental Health Authority.

Upon obtaining his MSW, Aaron assumed leadership positions, including Director of Adult Mental Health Programs for the MHMR Community Center. His professional journey expanded to encompass pivotal roles such as Director of Outpatient Clinics of South Texas at Bayview Psychiatric Programs, Director of Crisis and Jail Diversion at the Center for Health Care Services in San Antonio, and Clinical Director of Mental Health Services at Bluebonnet Trails Centers in Round Rock, Texas. Presently, Aaron serves as the Program Coordinator for Health and Wellness in Nueces County, Texas. His dedication to mental health care was recently recognized by the Nueces County Commissioners Court, appointing him to the Nueces County Mental Health and Mental Health Disabilities Center board of Trustees.

Aaron is poised to share his wealth of knowledge on Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), a model aimed at supporting chronically mentally ill patients within their communities.

Community health refers to non-clinical approaches for improving health, preventing disease and reducing health disparities through addressing social, behavioral, environmental, economic and medical determinants of health in a geographically defined population.

Substance Abuse Disorder

Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are treatable, chronic diseases characterized by a problematic pattern of use of a substance or substances leading to impairments in health, social function, and control over substance use.

HIV Prevention

HIV Prevention programs for persons vulnerable for the acquisition of HIV. Individual and small-group interventions have been shown to significantly reduce risk behaviors among people who have been diagnosed with HIV to help ensure they do not transmit the virus to others.

Substance Abuse Prevention

Substance abuse prevention programs involves helping individuals develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to prevent substance abuse.
